Diamond Hunter Scott Ryan Tischler Gives Back
PHOENIX, Arizona - Entrepreneur Scott Tischler makes frequent trips to Africa in search of diamonds. Soon, his trips to Africa will be about more than just diamonds, as he coordinates efforts to bring relief to the poorer slums he’s seen within the continent.
Tischler has always made efforts to give back to the people of Africa during his visits- buying them bags of rice or even paying a young girl’s way through school. One particular trip to Kroo Bay, the poorest region of Sierra Leone, was incredibly eye-opening for Tischler and his team.
Kroo Bay is a slum located in Freetown, Sierra Leone. It is covered in garbage, and there is no electricity or running water. Situated in a place where two rivers meet the Atlantic, Kroo Bay frequently floods and most of its children are ill. The people need safe shelters, food, and clean water.
Scott Tischler had made it a habit to buy one hundred 50 Kilo bags of rice for the people of Kroo Bay, which would help to feed them for several months. One day, he decided to treat the children of the town by buying pastries with his rice. When Tischler and his team presented these sweet treats to the Chief, he asked them to take a bite, and Scott politely declined- insisting that they were for the children. The Chief was persistent, finally saying, “You take a bite to prove you haven’t poisoned it.” Astonished, Scott Tischler took a bite as the children excitedly looked on.
Taken aback by the knowledge that the people of Kroo Bay needed to worry about being poisoned when they were already facing such grim circumstances, Scott Tischler is now more motivated than ever to help these people live better, cleaner, and healthier lives. It’s a daunting task and Tischler says, “it is very important that it is done correctly.” By the end of this year, Tischler plans on having the charity up and running in full swing.
